Today we went hiking at the highest mountain, Carrauntoohill. The loop is a circular walk that is up to about a kilometer from the base of the highest mountain, so a good view of the Devil's ladder is guaranteed.
We have to walk from pole to pole, because this is a swampy area with few passable paths. We should therefore warn you that after a heavy rainfall this can become a strenuous walk and in places your feet may sink deep into the peat. When hiking in Ireland, but especially for this particular hike, it is essential to wear good waterproof clothing and high mountain boots.
The stunning views during this walk are unequalled and at times you'll imagine yourself in no-man's land where you are alone with the sound of the rustling of the wind, surrounded by mountains and a deep black lake. On the way we eat our homemade bread, sitting on a nice big boulder, enjoying the views. At the end of the walk we have to cross a river. It is really exciting to jump across from stone to stone, a piece of cake for us.
Back home we enjoyed a well deserved mug of hot chocolate with whipped cream!
